A Day in the Park

By K J Page

I have plenty of time here in the park to reflect on life. Sleep is next to impossible with cold creeping into the thin blankets. Comfort is denied with hard ground and seats not made to sleep on.

There is no power at the tent sites. There is no camp fire pit. There is only a framed graveled box upon which to pitch a tent and a picnic table for those lucky enough to have food to lay out.

The washroom at this camp ground is probably one of the cleanest I have ever seen. And there is a bit of warmth in the shower room when the heat is turned on. Most of the spots seems to be taken by permanent residents in travel trailers of all sorts. Only one other over night camper has come and gone in the tent site.

The tent is in the back of the lot next to the trees bordering the railroad and highway with heavy truck traffic. The crossing right behind the tent. Every morning a long train comes to park over the crossing and for hours the safety gates are down and the bells twang shrilly on and on and on until one is not sure whether the now constant headache is caused by lack of food and water, cramped and sore neck and back muscles or the continual harsh clanging.

The wind has not let up all day, the branches overhead not stilled. Leaves and bits and pieces of bark and cones fall ceaselessly. The wind picks up to rock the vehicle and whirls around the corners in ever increasing gusts.

The site costs 20 dollars a day.

Life in the park...................................

20 bucks for no hookups? What a rip! I hope you're not stuck on a concrete pad!

ps> I thought you were camping. I meant no offense. I grew up vacationing in campgrounds in tents and pop-up trailers.

It appears that this will be a long vacation - from one camp spot to another as long as the price of admission is affordable.

Goodluck on your search for a much-affordable campsite to really rest your body. Camping connotes fun and relaxation, so don't risk the purpose if you're haggling with the admission fees. There are many to choose from I believe.

Lita - In the past 8 years I ave spent a lot of time in camp grounds - how well I can relate. Most of those times were in a trailer. I have done some tent camping before - mostly in groups. Lone camping is a new experience and will surely bring more insights to the 'real' camp out experience!!

I read your blog about living in a tent in "the park!" Are you really living alone in a tent? Why is this? And you say you have no family or friends who will help you? What happened to your job and home? This is a terrible way to live - no possibility of a job and no one to help. Have you tried a church to get some assistance? There must be some way you can obtain assistance over living in a tent in a park. That is dangerous and not healthy. I hope you find something soon.

Oscar -Summer weather keeps days warm - evening get a bit chilly, but wrap up warm in down sleeping bag........For now - camping is the cheapest way to go...... summer hotel rates are thru the ceiling! I have been a loner all of my life - nope - no family - all gone - no friends - never had time - devoted too much time to work............... the up side of all of this is that it will provide lots of material to write about!

Excuse me? I want to know how you can afford wireless internet and a laptop but can't afford shelter? Wireless is around 80 bucks a month and your laptop is around 500 or more and you have electricity in your tent? What gives?.........and how much cash do you have under that tent?

AR - Go camping man!! Internet is provided for the entire RV park and it comes with space rent - $20 a night for tent space. The computer is 5 - 6 years old - refurbished and bought for about three hundred well over a year ago while still pinching pennies working. And No there is no power outlet at the tent site - I have an old power converter that plugs into the vehicle. Next?? Want to know about the vehicle as well? Over ten years old and bought when I was making really good money in the tourism industry. Clothes? All bought at Ross's Dress For Less - anywhere from $2 - $10. Small travel case - left over from days on the road. Tent - 25.00 on sale. Blankets and pillows - all garage sale items bought over the years. I really am a frugal type person not overspending to live. Wendy's has great children's burgers for 99 cents. And when I was making good money and friends and family needed help, I gave - freely..............no questions asked......Am I moanin? Hell no - I'm takin notes to write a book - all part of life's adventure.

oh and by the way - there's a pad of rocks under the tent that hasn't even deterred the voles!!

Well I came back to check this out and have questions. You have indicated that you are homeless or without family. And that you are also out of a job. Your computer and pickup are old - you bought a tent which you now live in! The length of time you have been out of work makes me wonder how you are surviving now. And you say that you helped family and friends - gave freely and now they have ALL turned their back on you. Why? That is just awful. I do hope you are doing better and things are beginning to look up for you. Take care in those camp grounds.

Oscar - Life in the park is simple and inexpensive. Thank you for your concerns. I am finding that there is plenty of time to do research on line, learn new things, meet new people, much to write - There is time to contemplate life and people and events and much much more. Now I have time to 'stop and smell the roses', to look at life from another angle, another view point and learn more from that.

Somewhere in reading your blogs i missed this one and sure hope that time has bein good to you. That you do not live in a park.but of course trees in parks are nice.sometimes a person contemplate life and people and events too much so maybe you do that. People listen to wrong pepole and do stupid acts. Sheep hide you know.Roses do not last forwever....so cannot smell all the time. What you think is a good rose may have thorns you do not see.

I have been thinking about the changes in the weather and the time of year and you living out there in a park! I sure hope you have found something more suitable, making plans for a warmer place, or have made connections in the area. Have you had any luck with a job prospect yet? After this length of time I wonder how your finances are holding out and wondering how you plan to survive or continue to live there? This kind of life is not and cannot be good for someone who is used to a better way of life and a roof over her head. Well K J, I do hope things are looking up. Take care out there.
